Twice in one day…

Posted in Crazy Wisdom on Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 11:43 pm by flerly.

Been a while since I’ve felt this inspired to just write. You’re lucky it’s just made for two LJ posts in one day. Believe I’ve been restraining myself.

Still cursing the cell signal here at the house with my carrier, of course, it’s just like home really except for the option to pick up the crappy house phone when the crappy cell phone isn’t working. Managed a too-quick birthday call to the sis, who enlightened me on the wonders of Charleston’s She-Crab soup, which I must make the opportunity to try.

Also managed to prank call California… I mean get through to the frewtnut niece on the second try (damn phone) and find out their situation. They packed up their cars and were evacuated for about 24-hours before the winds changed and the fire path turned east, the fire having come within a mile of their house. Apparently the sweetie great-niece felt her library took priority, as she loaded up her suitcase with her favorite books making for way more than she could carry herself.

School is out all week, they say, the air is still pretty bad, and ash covers everything, especially creepy as it clings to their halloween spider-webbed bushes around the house. I jokingly asked if they could choose a more dangerous place to live, with their hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes and wildfires, then she reminded me that in “winter” — aka, the rainy season, they also get mudslides, so she didn’t think she could do better for danger and excitement.

Back here on the opposite coast, we have been lazy. We took the dogs for a long walk on the beach as the tide was coming in, swallowing up the beach behind us. I had my first opportunity to play with Mag & Ben’s camera, as I snapped a jillion lousy shots of things on our walk. Maybe something will be worthwhile. The dogs are SO happy on the beach and do a million cute things that would be great to capture… they just don’t hold still for long. Have to say, the amount of surfers in the water was higher in that direction, but that camera isn’t made for stealthy shots of anything. Might as well have a neon sign, “HI! I’M TAKING YOUR PICTURE… YES YOU, IN THE BOARD SHORTS WITH THE MUSCLES AND THE TATTOO. YOU KNOW THAT BECAUSE THE PENIS-LIKE EXTENSION OF THIS CAMERA IS POINTING HAPPILY IN YOUR DIRECTION.” or something. Lens, whatever. It’s not subtle.

For the record, the food this week has been consistently amazing, even if I do say that after the night I cook dinner. It’s been fun to cook and to eat. The only even slightly funny thing to me is that “Coconut Joe’s Fish Taco” isn’t a taco at all. It’s a wrapped fish sandwich — breaded mahi, lettuce, tomato and mayonaise rolled in a soft flour tortilla. Are we really so far from Mexico here that South Carolinians don’t understand the concept of a “taco”? At the very least they could have called it a fish burrito… I might have bought that. Maybe.

Tomorrow, we get up for our one and only early morning walk. We should be up in time for the sunrise, but it will probably be too cloudy to be really great. More importantly, we’ll be up in time to legally allow the dogs to run free on the beach here without a leash, which can only be done between the hours of 3am and 8am. We’ve been good about staying legal, not only because of the signs and the regular sightings of the beach patrol here, but also because of the helpful neighbor who noticed us calling for Chester the one time he got out of the house and warned us that his dog got out once without his collar and the fine was $4000. Once he provided proof that the dog did have a collar with all the proper tags, he’d just escaped without it, they reduced the fine to $3000. Considering the looks of the amazing houses around us, that could very well be chump-change to the locals, but none of us have been up to risking it.

Today was supposed to be the day we all sat down and wrote letters, but I guess seemingly wonderful ideas late at night after enjoying quite a lot of rum and coke aren’t so wonderful in the light of the next day. Despite my intentions not to, I have been partaking a bit on this trip. In the back of my mind has been my upcoming doctor visit on Monday, which I’m not looking forward to. Of course, today I got the automated reminder/confirmation phone call on my cell. Glad it kept a signal long enough for me to press 1 to confirm. I’d say that call prompted me to behave a bit, but the very large margarita I had tonight would contradict that.

This week I’ve continued to offer to be our DD as we go out, and the girls try to protest. They insist that they want me to have fun too so we can just take a cab, but I honestly just am not too keen on being really drunk at all anymore. Drinking is fine. Slightly buzzed is fine. I’ve got the balance down to know how much is enough and it’s not hard to stop there. This way, I get to try cool beachy-drinks, I get to wrangle the funny drunks, I have money left at the end of the night, I don’t wake up with a headache or a sick stomach, and I’m ready to do it all over again. It’s my vacation, and this is me having fun. If I’d let myself get sick-drunk, I’d be angry and depressed. This cruising is perfect to me.

Tomorrow, after walk… crepes a la Kit for “brunch”. I was hoping to pick up some champaign to go with our OJ for brunch tomorrow, but I got banned from going to the store tonight for some reason. Last night the drunk-girls convinced our waitress I was an evil girl who liked to pick up checks for the whole group while they weren’t watching, which is wholly unfounded. ONCE this trip. Jeez, but anyway… banned now from going by Kit. Of course, before they left, while we were talking about what we needed, Nicola mentioned cookies and I smiled and nodded to second it, so when I got banned from going so abruptly I thought maybe they were trying to pull some kind of birthday evilness instead of cookies. I told Maggie I hoped they brought cake, because I could go for some, but they came back apparently without even the evil cookies, leaving me confused at being yelled at and banned from going, and most especially, without cake when it would have been good. But all is well that ends with a tall margarita and the remembrance that we already had angel food cake, fresh strawberries and whipped cream in the fridge. Edit: Or the evil bitches could have just bought cake mix to bake later. Nice gesture sure — SO sneaky and subtle they were — but fat lot of good that does a craving at the moment. You missed your window, losers. =P

I am going to miss long walks on the beach listening to audiobooks without a care in the world about the time most of all. Though, I am looking forward to some cool afternoons of bike riding again. It doesn’t seem like fall to me here in the low country, where there are no hills covered in changing leaves. The change of scenery has been a nice reboot, mentally. In fact, we were talking about that the other night, how nice it would be if people really had the ability to do a reboot mentally when they started getting crazy. Realize you’ve let things get out of hand, then just reboot and try it again. Lose the mental clutter. Definate tough thing to do.

Maybe I should stop babbling here and write some letters afterall, before I get back to my normal world that is just too busy.
