City of sin, come and let me in…

Life in the big sleazy city comes alive in all colors… and that is a from a rare source — a good review of this movie.

Sin City… it’s art based on art that’s based on art — that is, a movie based on a comic book based on a film genre — and, like anything three stages removed from inspiration, it has nothing to say. It’s a style piece, a fever dream about film noir, and that hardly seems ambitious or important.

Yet if the movie’s aims aren’t lofty, its entertainment value is high and consistent. Virtually every moment of “Sin City” engages the mind and the eye. The energy never flags; the story never stalls. It starts in motion, and ends in motion. To make a movie this entertaining is to accomplish a small miracle.

Reviewers and moviegoers alike who go to this expecting another comic book used as a plot for a conventional movie, simply aren’t going to get it. This is a comic book set in motion, to only be loved by those geeky enough to find joy in those pages.

Someone needs to run with Frank Miller’s vision on a Batman movie soon…

When the opportunity arises — read Friday meeting cancelled — to see what will be a big box-office movie on opening weekend at one of the early afternoon, less crowded shows rather than wait a month because you can’t stand the crowds, you take it. Even this first show was too full of talkers for my tastes, but… still worth it. This is just one of those films people will be reacting audibly to, so expect that, and the more crowded it is, the worse it will be.

I’m looking forward to seeing this one again.
