Okay.. here is a plea for help or information…

Posted in Crazy Wisdom on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 9:58 am by flerly.

AOL Instant Messenger, you all know and despise it. Well, as of the past week, my primary AIM nick (which has never been an actual AOL account nick), has suddenly apparently been blocked, somehow. Let me explain, I can login to AIM with the actual AIM client or with Trillian, and I get no errors… password accepted, yatta yatta, BUT when I am signed on, no other AIM users can see me. None of my AIM buddies appear on my list. The ONLY people who can see me and I can see are actual AOL users.

Recently, when I was trying to test it out on my newer pc at home, I realized I only had Trillian, not actual AIM installed. So in doing a search to download AIM, I came across AOL Quick Buddy (Java AIM) and decided to try it. Well, much to my surprise, it works exactly as it is supposed to. I can see and be seen by all when I login with Quick Buddy.

Anybody have a rational explanation for any of this? Or perhaps, a solution? Am I on some kind of AIM-registered-Trillian-abuser blacklist?

AOL can go to hell and like die, or die, or maybe like DIE.

man that is a whack ass problem. you said you didn’t have the aim client installed, so i’m guessing you never tried logging in with it, just the java web client??? i would try logging in with the actual aim client and seeing what your buddy list looks like with it. i mean the only reason people shouldn’t be able to see you is if you have them blocked, and if they are blocked aim will show a little blocked icon by thier screen name. try adding yourself to your list and see if you appear online.

i keep up with trillian in the news, and i haven’t seen anything about any aim-trillian blacklist. hell, i’d be the first one on a list of that type. i haven’t used the aim client in ages.

I do have the AIM client installed on my 2nd pc and logged in with it.. same problem. I even updated it, and same problem. Last but not least, it seems that I can’t see AOL people anymore. I was on my primary pc, “logged on” to everything per Trillian, and couldn’t see anybody… I walk downstairs, James is on AOL, he can see me on his list as online, which freaked me out… then when he tried to message me.. it told him I was offline.

I’m baffled myself. I haven’t heard of anything like this, but this is the same problem for me on three different pcs. It’s got to be something to do with that screenname.
